LIGHT WRITING

For my first attempt at light writing for a while I tested out which shutter speed to use, the longer the shutter speed I used the more strokes of light I captured. I haven't tried to capture known shapes but just waves of different coloured lines.

f/22
25 sec

I think this image is very effective because the lights are multicoloured and fill most of the image.

f/3.5
8 secs

In this image there is further light from behind where I was moving the torch from a nearby streetlight. Therefore you can see a bit of the person moving the light. I didnt use a tripod for this experiment so this is why there is a little blur but I think this is quite effective.

Next time I do this I will use a larger shutter speed and try to capture some shapes. I will also use a tripod, this will create solid lines with no blur.

Further light writing

Here are my images of light writing using a tripod so that there is not unwanted movement.

For this image I had quite a big torch, I tried having this light on its own however it was too bright.  Therefore for this image I put my hand over part of it so that it blocked some of the intensity, creating a pink look. There is also some yellow lines in the top right hand corner from a nearby streetlight but I think this turned out quite effective.

For this image I also used this torch, I made my model place the torch under his chin therefore illuminating his own face. Due to some movement it has duplicated his face. You have to admit it has had a creepy effect!

I use two lights for this image, I really like this image due to the blue light having simalar movements to the white light. All strokes also fit the composition.

I did this image mid afternoon in the hallway of my house with all the doors closed. It has made me doing the strokes visable which I quite like. If I was to do a simalr shoot I would make my shapes a bit bigger. In this one I attempted to draw a stickman!

I have used the same tecnique and setting but this time written my name in front of me.

I did these waves close to the camera so that it goes across the while image. We can also see me moving out of the composition to the right of the light.

Having tried light writing a couple of times
I will try a different way to use long exposure next time....

I have previously done light writing at college in a dark room and found the outcomes really interesting. Having researched light writing on the internet for further inspiration I have come across some really good photographers who have tried this. Here is what I have found:

Gjon Mili and Picasso

This is an image of Gjon Mili's. Here he has attached flash lights to an ice skaters boot and captured the persons movement around the ice rink, whilst they jumped or twirled. He began taking this kind of images in the 1930's- 40s. He used the tecnique to study the skaters movements.

Mili visited Picasso in 1949 , Picasso took inspiration from his light photography and decided to undertake his own simalar work. Here is an example:

This was photographed by Mili, Picasso used the tecnique to create artworks which would only exist for a few seconds unless of course photographed.
