FINAL IMAGES FOR PORTRAIT/ PRODUCTS

Having looked at the possible successful images from the 2 product and 1 portraits shoots, I have chosen the following images that would make a goo advertising image for the proposals.

IMPULSE BODY SPRAY

This was an image where I used one main light on the right of the subject. I put this spray in the centre of the composition. Along side the bottle I have included a flower that links with the colour scheme of the product. I have done this in order to create a feminine feel to the image, to make it appeal to the women target audience. It also links in with the images of flowers in the heart logo for impulse. The flower also connects with the idea of fragrance. I think adding extra props add extra dimensions to the viewers point of contact.

PANTENE PRO- V

This is an image I did with one main light on the right to add light to the bottle, I have used a light at the back of the light table to add a form of high key lighting. This additional light has image the bottom of the image look rather purple, this may appeal to the female audience. I used two bottles in the composition, having the shampoo at the front giving an idea of preference, as the shampoo is mostly photographed in advertising campaigns.

PORTRAIT FOR PANTENE PRO- V

I have chosen an image where I used a main light on the right and used high lighting. I liked the white background as it is more feminine. It makes the models black hair stand out also. I have chosen an image where the model has spun her hair around, which promotes the movement of her hair. This has been done in similar campaigns but few have white backgrounds.

PRODUCT 2 IMPULSE

In the same session for the shampoo product I did images for product 2, Impulse. I used similar lighting set ups, as again I wanted quite a light background to create a feminine appeal.

Here are my images for the shoot that are most successful...

Like the other product shoot I used one light on the right with a soft box. In this image I have only used one bottle in the composition, it makes the viewer concentrate on what the product is.

Here I have used three bottles, with one at the back in the centre.

Here they are in a line, the shadows are all formed on the left.

Here I have put these three bottles really close to each other in the centre.

In these images I have used flowers with colours that coordinate with the bottles of spray. This is again to appeal to the female target audience.

I will once again consider these images to find a final product image for the spray...

PRODUCT 1 PANTENE PRO- V

In my second studio session, I did my product studio shoot. I firstly did Pantene Pro-V shampoo and conditioner, which I took the concept for the portrait shoot from. Here are the best images...

In this shot I used a light table as I wanted a light background. I used one light on the right for the shot with a soft box on, as in previous exercises in the studio I liked the diffused light. As I haven't used another light or reflector on the left of the bottles there is a shadow formed. I have used two bottles in the shot and they are centred in the composition.

In this photograph I decided to just use one bottle of shampoo. It is slightly to the right of the centre in order to get the shadow in the image fully.

I think the only fault in this image is that the shampoo if fully in the composition but the conditioner is not. I have placed the shampoo in front of the conditioner to give an idea of preference and dominance of the first bottle.

Here I have used the same set up of the bottles but slightly moved back with the camera so that both bottles are fully in the image.

In this image I used the same light set up but added an extra light at the back of the light table, directly behind the bottles. Therefore there is a high key light effect, it makes the bottles seem floating rather than seen sitting on a table. The light at the back has slightly formed a purple look that fades our towards the centre. It looks like one of the research images I looked at in my proposal.

I will reflect on these images later to find a final image for the Pantene Pro- V Product shoot...

PORTRAIT FOR PANTENE PRO- V

RANKIN

I have been aware of this photographer for many years, Rankin does many interesting images using models. I have seen on his website images that relate to my portrait proposal. Here are some images that caught my eye...

In this image he has created emphasis on the hair by taking an image close up.

Here Rankin has used short lighting which pulls out the face form the image.

I really think this runs in well with my proposal, I will be trying similar lighting set ups, and focusing on the models face and hair in particular.

On Monday I had my first studio session where I decided to do my portrait shoot for Pantene Pro- V shampoo and conditioner. I used the following types of lighting- hair lighting, rim lighting, main light, butterfly lighting and high key lighting.

The following images are the best which I will narrow down for my final image which will suit my target audience and product.

f13, 1/60
In this image the rim light has been used with the main light. The rim light helps to create a glowing outline around the hair. The main light just adds some light to the face.

f13, 1/60

This image also uses the same lighting set ups. However the model is faced towards the left now. The amount of the main light shown makes it broad lighting.

f13, 1/60

Hair and main lighting.
I used the hair light in this image to create emphasis on the hair. I put this light high on the left. I think the hair light is a little to bright in this image.

f10, 1/100

Again I used the main light on the right, and the hair light. I made the model face a little more the the side in this image.

f14, 1/125

High key lighting. In this image I used a quick shutter speed because of the bright lighting I used. I used a main light because otherwise it would cause the model to be a silhouette in the image.

Left image: f14, 1/125. In this image I used high key lighting. I made the model stand to the side. It focuses on the curl that is loose at the back of the face.

Right image: f14, 1/100. In this image my model flicked her hair around, as looking at the research this is often used in images advertising hair products.

PHOTO SKILLS A ASSIGN 2 PROPOSALS

For this assignment we have been told we have to produce two product studio shots and 1 portrait shot for a chosen client.

I have chosen to do Pantene Pro- V shampoo for one of my product shoots and the portrait shot and impulse body spray for the other.

Here are some of the images I looked at for my research, I have discussed them in my proposal...

For my portrait...

For my products...

HIGH AND LOW KEY

LOW KEY

This is images with...

- darker tones, often with black background

- underexposed intentionally

- idea of mystery, darness and threat

I haven't tried this kind of lighting in this session as it is quite simalar to the images produced in the earlier illuminating objects exercise.

HIGH KEY

Images with...

- light tones

- overexposed

- purity, innocence, freshness

We did the following images using white umbrellas on the lights at the back of the set up, using a soft box light to light up the subject. If I hadn't of used the main light it would have caused silouettes.

CREATING SILOUETTES...

COMBINATIONS OF LIGHT WORKSHOP

USING COMBINATION OF LIGHT POSITIONS...

This is a diagram of all the light positions we explored when looking at combinations of light. In the following images we have looked at each light position on it's own, with a reflector and using combinations of positions.

MAIN LIGHT

f8, 1/100 secs

We had the main light to the right of model. The main light is the primary lighting source and is the brightest light in the set up. It cast the largest shadows, it is used to light up the subject. The light allows us to emphasise shape and form.

FILL LIGHT

This light is darker than the main light it is used to bounce back light to create less contrast between sides of the face. This is like using a reflector to stop harshness and big shadows.

BACKGROUND LIGHT

This lights whatever is behind my subject, rather that the subject itself. It is always aimed at the background.

RIM LIGHTING

This light is placed directly behind the subjects head, this has created a detailed ouline to the model. I partcularly like how it emphasises the subjects hair.

RIM AND MAIN

This makes the image a lot brighter, I don't really like using the main light with the rim as it pulls away the ouline and emphasis created.

HAIRLIGHT

This light is placed to the side slightly and is quite high in order to light up the hair, this would be a good light to use if I was doing a advertising campaign for a hair product.

SHORT AND BROAD LIGHT WORKSHOP

SHORT LIGHTING

In this lighting effect the face turned away form the camera is lit.

Diagram of set up ...

This effect is a lot more flattering than broad lighting.

BROAD LIGHTING

Diagram of set up...

In this position the side of the face turned to the camera is lit. It is less flattering especially if the model has a wider face than short lighting.
